We are thrilled to introduce Sebastian Wiegand, our current studio program artist at 99 Canal, using Studio 4 to work on a series of new paintings, some of which will be presented in Paris in the spring.
Sebastian Wiegand’s practice combines autobiographical details, art historical references, notations extracted from literature and immediate social observations in order to pursue both recent and unknown possibilities in representational and narrative painting.
He is interested in the medium as a container for experience and its potential to comment on contemporary western society, including its ideologically induced lifestyles, belief systems and political positions. Together with Rosa Joly he is the cofounder of Scheusal, an artist run space in Berlin.
Wiegand spent his time at 99 Canal to produce new works as a contribution to the group exhibition „Férocité à domicile“ curated by Oriane Durand, which will open May 15th at the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris. The show will be on view until July 19th. The exhibition highlights the specific and ambivalent relationship that individuals maintain with their mother or maternal figure.
