The sculptor and installation artist Eva LeWitt (Italy, 1985) is 99 Canal’s new resident artist who will use “Studio 2” to produce a permanent installation piece for the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Using soft and pliable, semi-transparent materials such as acetate, latex, and sponge, LeWitt composes arrangements of hanging geometric forms and gradations of undulating color. Her monumental, most often site-specific installations are concerned with the inherent properties of her materials: their opacity or transparency, flexibility or rigidity, and weight and volume. Constructed in situations without additional adhesives, each work expresses the possibilities and limitations of her materials and the environments they inhabit. Alongside these formal investigations, she explores the expressive properties of light, both in the works themselves and in the spaces they inhabit.
LeWitt’s first solo show was held with Luhring Augustine in 2022. Other recent exhibitions of her work have been presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the Jewish Museum, New York, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, and the Clark Institute at Williams College, Williamstown. LeWitt’s work is in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, and Kistefos Museum, Norway, among others.
